Hiccups are the result of an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. The name as one can guess, is derived from the sound emitted. The condition usually does not require any treatment and it generally resolves itself.
Hiccups Symptoms:- Contraction of diaphragm
- Constant "hic" sound from the throat
Causes of Hiccups:- Eating a large meal or eating too quickly can also cause hiccups by distending the stomach
- Eating very quickly
- Eating something that is hot but still drinking cold water over it
- Sobbing or crying
- Eating very spicy food
- Consuming very hot food
- Consuming excessive alcohol or soda
- Coughing badly
- Laughing loudly for a long time
- Tumor
- Diabetes
- General anesthesia
Remedy:- Holding breath for a few seconds and then releasing.
- Filling a glass with ice cubes and water, and then drinking it slowly.
- Gargling with water also serves as an excellent home remedy for treating the problem of hiccups.
- Pulling the tongue with your fingers (not very harshly or forecfully).
- Sipping ice water.
- While sitting, leaning forward and compressing the chest and diaphragm against the knees.
- Closing of eyes, followed by massaging the eyeballs for a few minutes also helps.
- Peanut butter has been found to be helpful, (1 tsp of peanut butter)
- Placing a teaspoon of dry granulated sugar on the back of the tongue and then swallowing it.
- Stimulating the back of the throat or roof of the mouth with the index finger.
